What is an Information System?
- Hardware: The computers, touch screen monitors, and other tools used to relay data.
- Software: The programs that run the hardware, Jonas Club Software.
- Data: The information being input into the system (sales, invoices, payroll, etc).
- Procedures: The rules and guidelines followed within a system, based on the needs of a business.
- People: The employees and club members that use these systems.
Together, these five components work together to make the information system used by Park Avenue Club. The main issue we as a team encountered when asking about their information system was a key problem. The software component of the system was not up to date.
Park Avenue Club uses the popular Jonas Club Software on all of their computer devices. This software is a paperless service management application, that is an intuitive and integrated solution for companies that generate $5 million to $100 million in annual revenue.
The problem Mr. Titus presented us with about the software is minor because it does not require immediate attention. However, it is a big concern since this software is the cornerstone of this business. The problem with the software, is that the updates do not run fast enough and do not actually "update" much of the software. Mr Titus admits that this must be due to the fact that they purchased the Jonas Club Software almost six years ago now.
An information system's software is key to the overall success of the system in correspondence to the business it is being used for. In this case, outdated software is holding the information system back from its true potential. The time wasted on downloading useless updates, along with the fact that these updates are not remedying the problems at hand are a problem that needs to be addressed.
